MATH 136 AB (Spring 2008)
This is the second half of the year-long sequence replacing Pre-Calculus and Calculus I. You will have covered the same topics as the Calculus I course at the end of the year. We use the same text as Calculus I, together with supplementary Pre-Calculus textbook A Companion to Calculus, covering pre-calculus material as needed, at the time it is needed. We will have covered the first three chapters of the textbook at the end of the fall term. You will be responsible to let me know when we need to stop and review these materials. You may do so by asking in class, sending an email, or talking to me privately, as you might desire.
Key Concepts of Math 135/136 Sequence : study of functions, limits, slope, differentiation, integration, the fundamental theorem of calculus
If you intend to take the full year of Math 135/136, you will receive one unit of credit for each semester. If you complete 136 successfully, you will receive a group 1 credit, and Q certification by finishing Q standards in Math 136. After 135/136 sequence, you will be ready to take Math 152 (Calculus II) course, or any other course that requires Math 151 as prerequisite.
Homework problems will be assigned each class hour. Homework will not be collected, but instead, your understanding of the material will be tested on Wednesdays via quiz or exam. Homework assignments will be posted above in the daily schedule as they are assigned each week. You are encouraged to work with other students in the class when solving the homework problems. Do problems before you look at any solutions! It helps you to understand the material better, and it will also boost your confidence on the topic.
There will be a quiz on each Wednesday, except on which we have four midterm (in class) exams. Attendance at the exams is mandatory! If you have a conflict, let me know as soon as you learn about the conflict - before the exam. There will be no excuses given on any missed quizzes or exams unless your advisor's or dean's official letter is submitted. Only then you will be allowed to take a make-up exam. Each exam is worth 125 points.

Each exam is worth 125 points, and the percentage of total points on weekly quizzes is counted as 200 points toward the final grade. A comprehensive final exam is worth 300 points. This final exam is inclusive of all material in Math 135/136 sequence.
You will receive 20 extra points for attending all classes during the semester. If you compile 860 points at the end of the semester (B grade) without missing a class you will get 880 (B+). A point will be deducted for each absence. This policy is created to motivate you to attend all classes and participate in active learning. Keep this in mind! You are taking this class to further your career/future plans, and to learn the necessary concepts and skills.
