| Boffin | Someone engaged in back room scientific or technical research |
| Wonk | Synonym for nerd: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits |
| Syzygy | The nearly straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies (as the sun, moon, and earth during a solar or lunar eclipse) in a gravitational system |
| Ersatz | Being a usually artificial and inferior substitute or imitation |
| Sanction | **this word has two almost opposite meanings** a) The detriment, loss of reward, or coercive intervention annexed to a violation of a law as a means of enforcing the law, b) Explicit or official approval, permission, or ratification |
| Peccadillo | A slight offense |
| Obfuscate | Darken, to make obscure; confuse |
