Activities and Ideas

Originally developed and implemented as a collaboration between
Sharon Crary (DePauw University), Lisa Hosler, Jay Hosler '89 (Juniata University, while on sabbatical at DePauw University), and Kim Whited (Ridpath Elementary School)

Continued as a collaboration between DePauw University and Ridpath Elementary School

The following experiments have all been done with kindergarten or first grade classrooms at Ridpath Elementary School in Greencastle, IN.

K-1 experiments

States of Matter
students mix baking soda & vinegar to learn about solids, liquids, and gases

Mixtures & Solutions
students compare oil & water to sugar & water and see butter separate out from milk to learn that all the parts of things are not always visible

Making Observations
students observe the behavior of dyes in milk and learn how to plan an experiment

Gravity & Air Resistance
students observe different objects dropping to the ground to learn about gravity and air resistance
