Students should inform themselves of of DePauw University's position on academic integrity as described in the Student Handbook. Your instructor also provides a written or oral explanation for his/her position on this issue, with additional information in multi-section courses at the top of the Course Schedule. In this particular class a student should understand that attempting to obtain course credit for work that is not their own or that violates the course rules in some way (e.g., attempting to receive credit for work that is performed for credit in another course) serves no educational purpose.
Examples (BUT THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST!) of work that would not be considered a student's own include:
I (i.e., you, the student) understand that if I violate the standards of academic integrity I may receive an F in this course.
Choose one of the following options: I have followed the directions and read the sections in the Course Information, in the Course Schedule of multi-section courses (near the top), and in the university's Student Handbook about Academic Integrity. I have no questions. I have followed the directions and read the sections in the Course Information, in the Course Schedule of multi-section courses (near the top), and in the university's Student Handbook about Academic Integrity. Though I have questions about this topic I have not exercised the opportunity and responsiblity to consult with my instructor about my uncertainties. For one reason or another I've not followed the directions to read the sections in the Course Information, in the Course Schedule of multi-section courses (near the top), and in the university's Student Handbook about Academic Integrity. I understand that "ignorance before the law" is not an acceptable excuse if my behavior should later be judged in violation of the standards of academic integrity for this course.
Based upon what your instructor has been able to determine from questions that he's asked, the administration of DePauw University seems to take the position that the presence of the following passage on page 119 of the 1998-2000 University Bulletin (as well as additional passages in the Bulletin and the Student Handbook) means that a student who chooses to matriculate at DePauw has with that decision also given his/her agreement to accept the consequent reductions in rights of confidentiality that such policies might require. As an employee of the university your instructor is expected to comply with the administration's interpretation.
Copies [of mid-semester progress reports] are not permanent or final but serve as a bsasis for advising students of their progress. Copies are sent to students, parents of first-year students and students on academic probation who receive any grade of C- or below and to faculty advisers . ... The University may release information on academic progress to the parents or guardian of dependent students.
Additionally, it is your instructor's impression, again from the answers given to questions that he has asked, that the administration of DePauw University takes the position that the description of "Academic Services" on page 159 of the 1998-2000 Student Handbook provides the basis for policy whereby personnel in the Office of Academic Services are authorized to seek and receive information about the performance of individual students from their teachers, even when those students might desire a fuller level of confidentiality between themselves and their professors. Again, as an employee of the university your instructor is expected to comply with such policies regardless of how he might personally feel about them. Despite these institutional positions which your instructor has done his best to describe accurately, your instructor thinks it is appropriate to ask students to indicate the level of confidentiality that they might prefer if their desires were a consideration in these matters. Thus, you are asked to read and respond to the following statement:
I (i.e., you, the student) realize that I may have certain rights of confidentiality with respect to my classroom performance in this course that should only be relinquished by my explicit waiver. Besides reporting my final course grade to the Registrar and responding to inquiries from the Scholastic Standing Committee and its Petitions subcommittee after the completion of the semester, I also give the course instructor permission to share information about my performance with university employees associated with the categories I have checked below. I understand that I may elect not to waive my rights in either of the categories below (by not checking it) without fear of penalty from the instructor. I also understand that even if I elect not to waive my right of confidentiality as applied to the reporting of my performance at mid-term, I will still receive a mid-term report of my performance directly from my instructor.
Choose none, one, or both of the following options: My instructor may share information about my performance with my academic advisor and others involved in the mid-term grade reporting process. My instructor may share information about my performance with individuals associated with the Office of Academic Services and the university student retention and advising program.
