Students
Charlie Balk
I enjoy watching sports, playing the guitar, and spending time with my family. I
am one of four brothers, and grew up outside of Boston. My plan is to major in
philosophy, but if I take a liking to SOAN maybe I might switch to that instead.
I'm excited about the Santa Fe trip and looking forward to getting to know all
of you better.
William Cawthern
I'm majoring in sociology and anthropology, but am not yet decided on a minor. I
was born and raised in Boalsburg, PA, all my life and have never been West of
Pittsburgh, so I'm really looking forward to staying in Santa Fe and
experiencing the Southwest. I'm most interested in the archaeological
perspectives of the Southwest, as well as the cultural plurality that I hear is
so prevalent in Santa Fe. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time outdoors,
watching movies, and watching and playing sports. I spent my whole life playing
baseball and lacrosse, but I am always ready for a backyard match of any sport.
I look forward to taking advantage of all that Santa Fe has to offer with my
classmates.
Amber
Codiroli
Amber is a senior at Colgate and is majoring in English and Religion. She
is from New Jersey and loves it, but will end up living in California or
Texas… or maybe New Mexico when she graduates. Amber’s plans for
the future include joining Teach for America or the Peace Corps, or going to
law school while learning to become a tattoo artist. Seriously. Santa Fe will be Amber’s second semester studied abroad
at
Colgate. She has just returned from London on the English study group and
is excited to experience life in a completely different city with this
unique program. Amber cannot wait to meet everyone in Santa Fe and
looks forward to what
will be an amazing semester!
Lindi Conover
[Lower Nicola Valley in Merritt, BC]
Lindi Conover is a senior anthropology and Women's Student major at DePauw
University. Her fascination with funny cat pictures determines her daily
routine, but she's academically interested in Native American Studies and
cultural anthropology. Lindi is a silly talker, should you ever catch her at the
grocery store, where she spends much of her time with her grandparents. Lindi
spent six weeks in India, researching child sex exploitation, which has resulted
in several conference papers and a publication by Syracuse University, co-edited
by Dr. Susan Dewey and Dr. Karen Brison.

I am a junior from Colgate University. I am an Education major and hope to
become an elementary school teacher. I love to play all sports especially rugby
and softball. I am a diehard Red Sox fan! I also enjoy drawing and playing
guitar. I am really excited to be in Santa Fe and get to know the group better.

Info: Earned my Bachelor's Degree in History from Cornell University.
Currently in the Master's of Arts in Teaching program at Colgate University.
I'm looking forward to the Santa Fe experience.

Symone Jackson
I live in Detroit, Michigan and I have lived there my entire life. I am
currently a Junior at Colgate with a major in Peace and Conflict Studies. My
hobbies are reading, dancing and snowboarding. I was on Colgate's Varsity
Women's Rowing team for two years but I retired for my junior year in order to
prepare for the LSATS. I'm interested in sociology and anthropology because I
feel that understanding the behaviors and origins of a people is a useful tool
in the study of conflict. I am also a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority
on campus.
Starr Kelly
I proudly come from the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg, a First Nation in Quebec. For
most of my life I grew up in Portland, Maine where I got the privilege to live
right on the coast. At Colgate I am majoring in Native American Studies and keep
myself busy leading groups like the Native American Student Association and
Sisters of the Round Table (SORT). In my spare time, I love to dance but also
can be found beading or playing around with my hand drum. On campus, I love
hanging out with my housemates in La Casa where we tend to be found in the
living room watching reality tv. Personally I perfer to watch House or King of
Queens, but it's not so much about what's on rather than who you're with. My
favorite music artist of all time is Buffy Sainte Marie. If you've never heard
her, you should look her up.
Erin Knauer
My name is Erin Knauer Lopera. My home state is Maryland, although I have lived
most my life overseas in Egypt and Spain. At Colgate, I am a SOAN major
(Anthropology) and Geology minor, and I enjoy swimming, playing soccer with the
women's club, dancing to spanish rhythms with Latin American Dance club, and I
am a member of LASO, Latin American Spanish Organization. I embrace my hispanic
heritage (my mom is Colombian) and my dream is to backpack through Central/South
America. I love to read, travel, daydream, write, learn new languages, and
exercise (running/biking/swimming)! I am excited to get to Santa Fe and start
the adventure.
Nina
Merrill
I will be graduating from Colgate in December '09, so I'm thrilled
that I will be in Santa Fe for my last semester! I am a Women's
Studies Major and Film and Media Studies Minor and I hope to work in
the organic/sustainable food field after I graduate. I am from New
York but will probably be living in California after graduation. I am
passionate about nutrition, alternative health, and sustainability,
and I am a vegan. I also love photography and doing pretty much
anything creative.
Shaterra Redd
’11 is majoring in psychology and is part of the Santa Fe Study Group. She will
be working at The Drama-Play Connection this summer in Boston where she will
work with autistic children to help them develop their social skills. She is
currently a Resident Advisor for sophomore students at Colgate. She is also a CU
cheerleader and has experience teaching gymnastics to 3-5 year-olds. She misses
the volunteering opportunities she has had in the past and hopes to give more of
herself in the future. She has enjoyed working with a wide range of people
through many experiences, particularly working at Cedar Point Amusement Park
last summer in Ohio. Here she worked as a supervisor in catering where she
supervised fellow co-workers and catered to different age groups where her
department served as a host for parties. She plans on joining the US Air Force
after graduating from Colgate. She looks forward to coming to Santa Fe as a
member of the SOAN Study Group and she anticipates learning more about herself,
Santa Fe as a community, and everyone she will meet.
Casey Schmidt
Casey Schmidt is a junior majoring in Sociology and Anthropology with specific
interests in social justice, gender studies, and community development. She
enjoys rock climbing, as well as general frolicking in the outdoors. Santa Fe
will be the perfect environment to pursue all her interests in more depth,
including traveling around the Southwest.
Jacqueline Serrato
Jackie grew up in south side Chicago, but feels equally connected to
México. When she's home she enjoys playing hide-and-seek with the
neighborhood kids, stopping by the taco drive-thrus at night, DJ-ing at
Mexican house parties, and playing the bass in the local church choir. This
summer she was hired by the church on a national level to organize
college-bound urban youth in various cities around the country. At Colgate
she is majoring in Latin American Studies, and practically minoring in
Anthropology. She has been the vice-president of the Latin American Student
Organization (LASO) for two years. After Colgate she wants to go to law
school in the midwest, focusing her law career on immigration and
naturalization, civil rights, and/or labor.
